Nanjing Week 2024 at UNESCO: Promoting Cross-Cultural Understanding Through Silk Road Heritage “`

Following a Paris Louvre exhibition on brocade and embroidery, Nanjing Week 2024 returned to France. On December 4th, an exhibition titled “Thematic Collection of the Cultural Exchanges along the Silk Roads: Architecture, Monuments and Urbanism,” a joint project of the Nanjing Municipal People’s Government and UNESCO, opened at UNESCO headquarters in Paris.

This exhibition highlights the “Architecture, Monuments, and Urbanization” volume from UNESCO’s flagship project, “Thematic Collection of the Cultural Exchanges along the Silk Roads.” It uses visuals and text to illustrate centuries of cultural and technological exchange along the Silk Road, focusing on architecture, monuments, urban design, and construction.

UNESCO Assistant Director-General Gabriela Ramos stated that the collaboration with Nanjing showcases the interconnectedness of humanity and the importance of intercultural dialogue.

Michael Turner, UNESCO Chairholder and Thematic Collection coordinator, emphasized the contemporary relevance of reinterpreting cross-civilizational connections and revaluing Silk Road architectural heritage and urban development.

Wang Xiaoyan, Director of the Nanjing Municipal People’s Government Information Office, highlighted the vital role of heritage preservation and international cooperation in East-West cultural exchange. Nanjing’s ongoing collaboration with UNESCO includes a joint application for UNESCO World Heritage Site status for the Ming and Qing city walls, while expanding the city’s international cultural reach and promoting heritage protection.

As a Belt and Road Initiative hub, Nanjing’s exhibition showcases its historical and modern roles in international cultural exchange. Its location, maritime history stemming from the Qin and Han dynasties, and sustained connections with East and Southeast Asia are emphasized. Nanjing’s collaborations with UNESCO extend to initiatives like the World Historical and Cultural City Expo, the International Youth Forum, and the Yangtze Culture Forum, offering Chinese solutions to global challenges.

International organizations, experts, and scholars attending the opening day praised the exhibition for its insightful presentation of the Silk Road.
