(SeaPRwire) – The individual accused of a shooting at Saturday’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, which was attended by President Donald Trump and his cabinet, has been identified as a California teacher who traveled by train across the U.S. to execute his plan.
Multiple officials have named Cole Tomas Allen, 31, as the person law enforcement captured while attempting to breach a security checkpoint at the black-tie gathering held at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C.
As gunshots erupted, President Trump and other senior officials were hurriedly evacuated, with hundreds of guests taking shelter beneath their tables.
Based on his social media and professional profiles, Allen is a teacher, engineer, and video game developer residing in Southern California. Bloomberg reports that he legally acquired several firearms prior to the attack.
U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro stated that Allen is anticipated to be charged on Monday, with counts including using a firearm during a violent crime and assaulting a federal officer with a dangerous weapon.
The following details are known about Allen.
A teacher from southern California
Allen resides in Torrance, California, a suburban city in the Los Angeles metro area with approximately 143,000 residents. In response to reports identifying Allen, Torrance Mayor George Chen issued a social media statement late Saturday, asserting that “one individual’s alleged actions do not define our city.”
On his LinkedIn profile, Allen identifies as a game developer, engineer, scientist, and teacher. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Caltech in 2017. He later received a master’s degree in computer science from California State University, Dominguez Hills in 2025.
His profile indicates he worked part-time for over six years at C2 Education, a company focused on college test prep and counseling. A December 2024 Facebook post appears to show Allen receiving a “Teacher of the Month” award at C2’s Torrance office.
He also notes being a self-employed “indie game developer” for the past seven years. He created a game titled “Bohrdom,” which he published on the Steam platform. The game’s profile describes it as a “skill-based, non-violent asymmetrical fighting game loosely derived from a chemistry model that is itself loosely based on reality.”
What was a potential motive?
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche informed NBC News on Sunday that investigators think the shooter was aiming for Trump Administration officials, “likely including the President.”
Speaking at a White House press conference shortly after the shooting, President Trump labeled the shooter a “lone wolf whack job.”
On Fox News Sunday morning, Trump mentioned an alleged “manifesto” from Allen.
“The guy is a sick guy,” Trump stated. “When you read his manifesto, he hates Christians, that’s one thing for sure. He hates Christians, a hatred.”
“I think his sister or his brother actually was complaining about it,” Trump added. “Even complaining to law enforcement.”
CBS News, citing a senior U.S. official, reported that authorities discovered anti-Trump and anti-Christian rhetoric on the suspect’s social media during their investigation and learned he had participated in a No Kings protest in California.
The Washington Metropolitan Police Department stated Allen was armed with a “shotgun, a handgun and multiple knives” when he rushed the checkpoint. Bloomberg reports he spent years legally building a collection of firearms before the attack, buying a shotgun eight months prior and a semi-automatic pistol in October 2023.
Officials suspect Allen took a train from California to Chicago and then to Washington, where he was a registered guest at the Washington Hilton Hotel, the annual venue for the WHCA dinner.
Investigators are searching Allen’s California home and his D.C. hotel room, examining his electronic devices and writings, and speaking with family and friends to establish a definitive motive.
According to Federal Election Commission records, Allen is registered to vote with no party preference but did contribute $25 to ActBlue, a political action committee that fundraises for Democratic candidates, in October 2024.
How the shooting unfolded
The WHCA dinner is a yearly occasion for White House personnel and the media, usually involving comedy and a satirical presidential address.
The ballroom hosting the annual assembly of press and White House staffers was shocked into quiet when gunfire broke out just after 8:30 p.m. on Saturday on the floor above the dinner.
“A man charged a security checkpoint armed with multiple weapons, and he was taken down by some very brave members of the Secret Service,” Trump said during a White House news conference soon after the event. He noted one law enforcement officer was hurt but was in “great shape.”
Ballroom video depicted Secret Service agents rushing the stage to usher the president and Vice President J.D. Vance to safety. Attendees ducked under tables as gunfire sounded and a voice yelled, “Get down!”
While most attendees were inside the ballroom during the shooting, CNN’s Wolf Blitzer reported he was only a few feet away when he saw a gunman discharge a “very serious weapon” at least six times. He told CNN the shooter “seemed to have gone through the metal detector, but he had a weapon and he was firing a weapon.”
A TIME journalist at the event said Secret Service agents sprinted through the crowd to secure Trump Administration cabinet members immediately after several loud noises were heard on the ballroom floor.
