The two newest additions to the team are Marilyn Tryde and Bea Smith. Marilyn specializes in working with adolescents (15+ years) and adults facing challenges such as stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, low-self-esteem, anger, cultural identity, and relationship issues. With a focus on compassion, kindness, and authenticity, Marilyn aims to create a safe and non-judgmental space for clients to explore their internal struggles. She utilizes various therapy modalities including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness therapy, and positive psychology. This allows her clients to uncover limiting beliefs, manage emotional responses, and improve emotional awareness.

Having grown up in a multi-racial household, Marilyn possesses a deep understanding of cultural nuances and challenges, particularly within Eastern and Western cultures. Her professional background as a lawyer further equips her to support clients navigating workplace stress and challenges. Marilyn offers therapy in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin.

Marilyn holds a Master of Counselling from Monash University, along with a Bachelor of Law and a Postgraduate Certificate in Law from Hong Kong University. She is a professional member of the Hong Kong Society of Counselling and Psychology.

Bea practices strengths-based and trauma-informed counselling, offering a non-judgmental and empowering environment for clients. Recognizing the diverse experiences and needs of individuals, she tailors her methods to address a range of life events and mental health concerns. This includes managing school and work stressors, rebuilding self-esteem and trust after trauma, improving relationship dynamics, and exploring existential questions. Drawing on her experience working with children and adults, Bea believes in the growth and resilience of individuals facing challenges. She utilizes various therapy modalities including CBT, emotionally focused therapy, and positive psychology.

Having lived on three continents within diverse and high-achieving contexts, Bea understands the struggle and anxiety that can arise from trying to fit in and meet societal expectations. She recognizes the impact of comparison and competition within families, friendships, and workplaces on confidence, trust, and self-worth. She is passionate about working with individuals from diverse backgrounds, fostering post-traumatic growth, and reducing mental health stigma.

Bea holds a Master of Social Science in Counselling from the University of Hong Kong and a Bachelor of Science in Applied Psychology & Sociology from the University of Surrey. She is a professional member of the Hong Kong Society of Counselling and Psychology, the Hong Kong Professional Counselling Association, and the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.

Marilyn and Bea join a team of experienced professionals including Casey McGrath, Nicola Shannon, Dr. Amanda Friday, Simon Westcott, and Kari Entwisle, who provide individual therapy for adults; Lianne Lim, John Mok-Lamme, and Brenton Surgenor, who provide both individual therapy for adults and couples counselling; and Jacquelyn Tryde and Jojo Tong, who offer individual therapy for adults and counselling for adolescents.

Founded in 2021 in Hong Kong, Maple Tree Counselling was established by a group of colleagues and friends who recognized the growing demand for mental health services and were committed to helping individuals.
