NANJING, China, Dec. 05, 2024 — The Suzhou Yuexi 500-kilovolt Substation Project, a crucial initiative by State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power Co., Ltd. to address peak winter energy demand, commenced operations on November 29th. This marks Jiangsu Province’s first fully indoor 500-kilovolt substation. It augments Suzhou’s power transformation capacity by 2 million kilovolt-amperes, bolstering electricity supply reliability in Jiangsu and the broader Yangtze River Delta region this winter.
To accommodate growing regional electricity needs and enhance power supply dependability, State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power repurposed valuable urban land. The existing Yuexi 220-kilovolt substation was demolished, making way for the new Yuexi 500-kilovolt substation on the same site.
Unlike conventional 500-kilovolt substations, which typically require over 50 mu of land, the Yuexi substation occupies approximately 20 mu – more than half the space. Employing a three-row stacked and compact design reaching 23 meters in height, the project integrates all major equipment, including transformers and gas-insulated switchgear, within a single building.
This indoor configuration not only minimizes the footprint but also incorporates sustainable building practices. According to State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power Engineering Consulting Co., Ltd., rooftop solar panels on the distribution building reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 100 tons annually and save more than 40 tons of standard coal. An integrated rainwater harvesting and reuse system conserves approximately 3,300 cubic meters of water yearly for landscaping and irrigation.
