(SeaPRwire) – Education spending is on the rise globally. The spread of AI has led companies to invest in edtech for employee upskilling, while schools are using platforms to personalize learning, deliver more engaging experiences, and reach a broader student base. Edtech firms, in turn, are tapping into this demand by creating hardware such as interactive whiteboards; software like teacher assessment systems; and multimedia educational materials. To evaluate the world’s biggest edtech market, TIME collaborated with data provider Statista to conduct an in-depth analysis of the top 250 U.S. tech companies shaping education—from early childhood to workforce training. Eligible companies had to focus mainly on developing and offering educational technologies, products, or services, and their rankings were based on financial stability and industry influence.
Methodology: How TIME and Statista Identified America’s Top EdTech Companies of 2026
Claiming the top spot on this year’s list is Duolingo, the well-known language-learning app that has also added math and chess courses in recent years. By the end of 2025, the company reported 50 million daily active users and generated over $1 billion in bookings for the first time. While its gamified design captures users’ attention, studies are divided on whether the app is effective for long-term language learning and retention. A 2021 review article in the journal Computer Assisted Language Learning found that although a handful of small global studies linked Duolingo use to better foreign language performance, their methodologies often lacked proper controls for other variables, making it hard to draw definitive conclusions about the app’s effectiveness. However, two new studies (2025 and 2026) showed that Duolingo can positively complement classroom-based language learning.
Ranked second is Coursera, the free online learning platform that has transformed access to education for all. A case study from a Vietnamese university’s undergraduate programs found that integrating platforms like Coursera can “enhance the curriculum with current content, global perspectives, and professional development opportunities, while also offering flexibility and cost efficiency.” Another study noted that workforce-focused certificate programs like Coursera Career Academy are a more flexible alternative to internships for students with full-time jobs or caregiving responsibilities.
ClassDojo (ranked 4th), which uses a point system to gamify classroom management, has faced criticism from some experts over surveillance and student privacy concerns. But research shows that in early education settings, tools like ClassDojo can help first graders become more aware of their behaviors and make positive changes, as well as encourage proactive parent-teacher communication and boost interest in a child’s learning progress.
The growing use of AI in edtech (Duolingo, ClassDojo, and Coursera have all added AI features to their platforms) raises additional questions, as teachers have expressed concerns about the cognitive offloading effect—where over-reliance on tech shortcuts can impair students’ memory, comprehension, and critical thinking. Some experts believe the best way to integrate tech into classrooms is for edtech companies to develop tools focused on educator training and support. The U.S. Department of Education, meanwhile, published a report advocating for the development of “inspectable, explainable, overridable AI” that supplements rather than replaces educators; it also calls on AI developers to involve educators, keep humans in the loop, and prioritize equity, trust, and safety for these tools.
