(SeaPRwire) –   President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump welcomed King Charles III and Queen Camilla upon their arrival at the White House on Monday afternoon.

The President and First Lady shared handshakes and brief conversation with the royal couple while posing for the international press on the red carpet. The group then moved to an interior drawing room for afternoon tea.

Earlier that day, an honor guard greeted Charles and Camilla at Joint Base Andrews, where they were presented with bouquets by children from British military families based in the United States.

Buckingham Palace stated that the four-day visit aims to honor the long-standing ties and contemporary partnership between the two nations, though the trip occurs during a period of significant diplomatic tension.

The visit is set against a backdrop of geopolitical friction stemming from the war in Iran, which has caused a rift between London and Washington. President Trump has frequently voiced disapproval of Prime Minister Keir Starmer for declining to take a more active role in the hostilities.

Prior to the visit, some British legislators called for its cancellation, citing concerns over the escalating political friction.

Prime Minister Starmer countered by noting that the monarchy serves as a vital symbol of the deep-rooted and lasting connection between the two countries, which transcends the individuals currently holding political office.

Security anxieties intensified over the weekend following a shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, where the suspect was subsequently charged with attempting to assassinate President Trump.

Following the event, Trump assured the public on Sunday that the King would be secure, adding that the royal couple was eager for the trip.

A busy itinerary awaits the King and Queen during their stay in America.

Emulating his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, Charles is scheduled to speak before a joint session of Congress on Tuesday, followed by a state banquet at the White House where he will be the primary guest.

The royal pair’s journey will include stops in New York and Virginia before they travel to Bermuda, a British overseas territory.
