Pakistan intends to formally nominate U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his role in de-escalating tensions between India and Pakistan earlier this year.
Past recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize include a former TIME100 Woman of the Year and previous TIME Persons of the Year.
According to the Pakistani government, President Trump displayed strategic foresight and statesmanship through diplomatic engagement with both Islamabad and New Delhi during a period of heightened regional instability. This intervention de-escalated a dangerous situation, leading to a cease-fire and preventing a larger conflict between the two nuclear powers, which would have had devastating consequences. The government emphasized Trump’s role as a peacemaker committed to conflict resolution through dialogue.
The Pakistani government added that Trump’s leadership during the 2025 Pakistan-India crisis demonstrates his continued commitment to pragmatic diplomacy and effective peace-building.
Trump announced the cease-fire between India and Pakistan on May 10, stating it was reached after U.S.-mediated talks. He thanked Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio for their contributions.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed gratitude to Trump at the time, acknowledging his leadership and proactive role in fostering peace in the region, and appreciated the United States for facilitating the outcome, which Pakistan accepted to ensure regional peace and stability.
Conversely, the Indian government made no mention of U.S. involvement in the mediation, stating that the agreement was worked out directly between India and Pakistan.
Pakistan’s nomination announcement follows Trump’s Truth Social post regarding the Nobel Peace Prize and his international mediation efforts.
Trump previously claimed credit for stopping the war between India and Pakistan.
Trump stated he wouldn’t receive a Nobel Peace Prize for stopping the war between India and Pakistan, Serbia and Kosovo, or maintaining peace between Egypt and Ethiopia.
Pakistan’s announcement also comes as Trump considers his options regarding intervention in the Israel-Iran conflict.
Trump has suggested the U.S. could continue supporting Israel from a distance or become actively involved in the conflict with Iran.
