Following a shooting on Thursday, April 17, at the Florida State University (FSU) campus, an unspecified number of individuals were transported to a local hospital.
A representative from Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare stated that they are unable to confirm the exact number of patients being treated. Around midday, FSU issued an alert regarding an active shooter in the vicinity of the student union. Subsequent alerts from the university advised the campus community to remain sheltered in place, confirming that law enforcement was on the scene.
At 1:04 p.m., FSU communicated via alert that authorities were “actively clearing rooms on the main campus,” and instructed individuals on campus to maintain their shelter-in-place status until contacted by officials.
The university has experienced a prior shooting incident. In 2014, a gunman shot and injured three individuals at a library situated near the center of the FSU campus. He was subsequently killed by law enforcement in an exchange of gunfire outside the library.
