(SeaPRwire) – Artificial intelligence is transforming our world. While much of the current discourse rightly centers on its potential risks, a significant part of the narrative is being ignored.
In 2015, global leaders committed to “leaving no one behind” and mobilizing trillions in investment to foster a more sustainable planet. Where do we stand today?
There has been some promising progress, including trillions of dollars in sustainable finance commitments from private financial institutions set for 2030. Exciting innovations are emerging across various sectors, even if they rarely make headlines. Nations like the U.A.E. and China are leading the sustainable transition, and cooperation within the Global South is growing. Conversely, in other areas, we have seen a decline in government ambition, leadership, and market clarity.
The rapid advancement and expanding capabilities of AI provide a means to bridge this ambition gap and expedite the transition to a clean economy. We should look to the private sector to drive this progress. By nature, the private sector is more agile, faster, and focused on economic growth and job creation. It is also the private sector that is spearheading developments in AI, space exploration, and the technologies that will define our future.
It is vital that we begin actively deploying AI across all industries and nations to build a better future. To achieve this, we must all become AI-literate. AI is merely a tool; those of us pursuing solutions must learn how to utilize it to obtain the answers and rapid results necessary for real-world impact.
We now possess unprecedented computing power to achieve our collective goals, including the 2030 targets established by the Paris Climate Agreement, the Sustainable Development Goals, and the Convention on Biological Diversity. However, to succeed, we must think on a global, systemic scale so that solutions can be scaled for the benefit of all. This is the core mission of the Sustainable Markets Initiative. Established in 2020 by His Majesty King Charles III during his time as the Prince of Wales, we focus on thinking big, identifying like-minded partners, and taking action.
The potential is limitless, but let us consider what we could accomplish by applying AI over the next five years toward a more sustainable and equitable future.
We can utilize real-time satellite data to protect and restore our oceans and natural habitats by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing Marine Protected Areas, as well as sustainable fisheries and land management, to meet the global goal of protecting 30% of our land, water, and oceans by 2030.
We can accelerate the commercialization of fusion energy to provide limitless power, fostering immense human progress and opportunity. We can design aircraft, ships, vehicles, and transport routes that are inherently sustainable and efficient, thereby reducing pollution and emissions.
We can develop transparent, end-to-end supply chains that allow consumers to know exactly what they are purchasing, its origin, and its sustainability credentials, enabling informed choices. We can optimize regional strengths within a unified, real-time global marketplace to improve trade efficiency.
We can discover cures for diseases through rapid medical innovation and analysis, sharing these breakthroughs globally to improve quality of life. We can reimagine education from early childhood through university to prepare humanity for the future. We can redesign governance and accountability systems, both locally and globally, to ensure fundamental principles are upheld and all voices are heard.
All of this is achievable today. Now is not the time to retreat or cling to post-World War II global norms and infrastructure—they are outdated and beyond repair. Now is the time to start fresh and design the world we want. With AI, combined with human ambition and imagination, anything is possible. We must be the architects of our future, not mere passengers. After all, from space, there are no borders separating our citizens, our air, or our water. We are one people, on one planet, sharing one future.
