Van Heel built a successful career in marketing over the decades, most recently serving as chief strategy officer for consultancy firm Heavenly. Heavenly has worked on brand campaigns for major clients including the BBC, HSBC, and England Rugby. According to the BBC, she now serves as chief marketing officer at Iduna Infrastructure, a company that owns significant swaths of Manchester’s electric vehicle charging network. During Burnham’s tenure as Greater Manchester mayor, he recused himself from all EV charging policy decisions to avoid any perceived conflict of interest.
Burnham has long spoken about van Heel’s unwavering support throughout his political career, even sharing a 2015 story about her appearing on the hit UK dating show Blind Date in the early 1990s. She was the “picker” on the show, and selected a suitor named Will from Surrey, who later went on to become the Conservative Party’s chief marketing officer. The pair never clicked on their date, a twist Burnham has joked about on multiple campaign stages to humanize his public image.
The couple has also faced profound personal tragedy together over the years. Van Heel underwent a preemptive double mastectomy after testing positive for the breast cancer gene, following her sister Claire’s death from the disease. Her mother and other sister also received breast cancer diagnoses around the same time. Van Heel has since participated in Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life events, raising awareness for the cause and advocating for better healthcare access.
If Burnham follows through on his core campaign promise to revitalize northern England, van Heel’s role at Iduna Infrastructure will become one of the most closely scrutinized first spouse professional ties in modern UK political history.
