HARRISBURG, Pa. — Pennsylvania’s Governor Josh Shapiro and his family were evacuated from the governor’s mansion after an arson attack, according to police reports released Sunday.
Authorities confirmed that the blaze was put out quickly and that nobody was hurt.
The fire occurred overnight, on the first night of Passover, a holiday that Shapiro and his family were observing at the governor’s official residence in Harrisburg. The Pennsylvania State Police released a statement indicating that the investigation is active, but they believe the incident to be arson.
Further details regarding the fire’s cause were not provided by police.
Shapiro, who is considered a potential Democratic presidential candidate in 2028, stated that he and his family were awakened around 2 a.m. by state troopers banging on the door after the fire started.
Shapiro added that the Harrisburg Bureau of Fire responded to the scene, and police safely evacuated his family while firefighters worked to extinguish the fire.
“Thank God no one was injured and the fire was extinguished,” Shapiro stated.
The Pennsylvania State Police are in charge of the investigation and are offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the responsible individual(s).
