GUANGZHOU, China, Feb. 24, 2025 — WeRide (Nasdaq: WRD), a leading autonomous driving firm, has received the green light to deploy its latest Robotaxi model, the GXR, for fully driverless, paid ride services in Beijing. This marks the second WeRide Robotaxi to achieve fully unmanned commercial operation in Beijing and the GXR’s first large-scale commercial deployment in China, following its introduction on the Uber platform in Abu Dhabi last December.
The service area will cover key areas within the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area, including high-speed rail stations. The GXR is also approved for commercial use on highways, including routes to and from Beijing Daxing International Airport.
In a mere four months since its official launch, WeRide’s GXR has rapidly transitioned to fully unmanned commercial operation, showcasing the company’s “WeRide speed” in deploying autonomous driving technology commercially.
“The commercial launch of Robotaxi GXR in Beijing is a key milestone for WeRide and the autonomous driving sector,” stated Dr. Tony Han, Founder and CEO of WeRide. “Moving from product launch to unmanned commercial operation in just four months demonstrates the readiness of autonomous technology to meet various transportation demands at scale. This expansion allows us to continue leading the way in autonomous mobility, making self-driving technology a reality for riders everywhere.”
The GXR, the result of over five years of WeRide’s work on Robotaxis, boasts an industry-leading L4-level redundant drive-by-wire chassis, an open mobile travel space, and the world’s first hidden B-pillar design. It can carry up to five passengers, offering the most spacious entry and exit, the best seating, and the largest luggage capacity in the Robotaxi industry. Users can request a GXR via the WeRide Go app, available in major mobile app stores.
WeRide is the only autonomous driving company globally providing commercial Robotaxi services in both China and internationally, with Robotaxi services operating in Beijing, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Ordos, Suzhou, and Abu Dhabi. In 2024, WeRide partnered with Uber to launch the largest commercial Robotaxi fleet in the Middle East. WeRide plans to launch fully driverless Robotaxi operations in Zurich, Switzerland, in 2025.
WeRide initiated fully unmanned Robotaxi services in Beijing in June 2023. With the GXR’s commercial debut, WeRide intends to expand its service area and scale, planning to increase its Robotaxi operations in Beijing to several hundred by 2025.
