SEOUL, South Korea, Dec. 08, 2024 — The South Korean AI music generation startup Pozalabs is addressing concerns about using copyrighted music in AI training. The company has responded to inquiries from key industry players, including SACEM, reiterating its dedication to ethical AI practices and respecting intellectual property rights.
Established in 2018, Pozalabs is known for its AI music creation tools, LAIVE and eapy, which enable users to generate original music, lyrics, and vocals. This innovative approach has garnered significant attention from both the tech and music industries.
Pozalabs’ technology relies on a proprietary dataset comprising over one million MIDI sound samples and 50,000 vocal samples, meticulously created by its 15 in-house professional composers. This approach ensures high-quality AI-generated music while mitigating copyright infringement and plagiarism.
SACEM’s Letter and Pozalabs’ Response
On October 2, 2024, SACEM sent a letter to Pozalabs, requesting the company cease using SACEM-affiliated music for AI training and data mining without authorization. This followed SACEM’s October 2023 statement advocating for ethical AI practices.
Pozalabs CEO Wongil Huh responded directly, stating, “We are not utilizing any music for AI training without permission.“
Huh’s response detailed Pozalabs’ AI training methodology, emphasizing the exclusive use of its proprietary MIDI dataset created by its in-house composers. This approach, central to Pozalabs’ operations since its inception, avoids the use of external music sources in its AI training.
Pozalabs’ Ethical Stance on AI and Music
According to the CEO, Pozalabs’ use of a proprietary MIDI dataset created by its internal composers establishes its responsible position in the AI music field. “This addresses copyright concerns and respects the creative contributions of artists and industry stakeholders,” he explained.
The company’s commitment extends beyond legal compliance. Pozalabs actively opposes the unauthorized use of copyrighted music for training data, viewing such practices as unethical and detrimental to the creative ecosystem. This reflects growing industry concerns about the potential misuse of copyrighted material in AI training.
Pozalabs has invited SACEM representatives to visit its Seoul office to foster transparency and collaboration. “We are eager to engage in open discussions and provide a comprehensive overview of our music generation process,” Huh stated.
Furthermore, the startup has expressed interest in collaborating with SACEM and its members, suggesting the development of artist-specific music generation models that could benefit both AI technology and human artists.
