GOTS Fights Greenwashing with #BehindTheSeams Campaign to Educate Consumers About Sustainable Textiles

For the second consecutive year, Global Standard is dedicating the month of September to highlighting the sustainable and social attributes of GOTS-certified products. This year’s #BehindTheSeams campaign expands upon the success of its predecessor, with a focus on educating consumers about the people and practices behind sustainable textiles, all while offering daily giveaways throughout the month.

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is recognized for its comprehensive approach to sustainability. From promoting human rights throughout the supply chain to prohibiting harmful chemicals in certified textiles, GOTS establishes a benchmark for integrity and sustainability. This campaign provides certified companies with an opportunity to showcase their leadership in transforming the textile industry and demonstrate how adherence to GOTS fosters a more environmentally responsible and socially conscious approach to textile production.

Throughout September, Global Standard will host daily giveaways on Instagram, featuring partnerships with leading GOTS-certified brands such as Frugi, FC St. Pauli, LangerChen, Natracare, Organic Basics, Mandala, Dedicated, and more. Additionally, two major giveaways will be held on the campaign’s website, offering visitors the chance to learn about sustainability by answering daily questions and earning entries. One lucky individual based in Europe and their guest will be awarded a sustainable trip to Paris, encompassing train travel, a two-night stay at the eco-friendly Eden Lodge Paris, and a private fitting for a custom GOTS-certified jacket by John Preston. The winner will also enjoy a dinner experience at La Table de Colette, a Michelin-starred restaurant committed to eco-responsibility, featuring a menu that highlights the carbon footprint of each dish. A fortunate winner residing in North America will receive a hand-built GOTS-certified organic “Serenade” mattress, generously sponsored by Naturepedic.

#BehindTheSeams is also emphasizing the significance of “organic in-conversion” farming and encouraging brands to support farmers during the crucial transition period from conventional to organic practices. For this campaign, GOTS has partnered with the Organic Cotton Accelerator (OCA), a multi-stakeholder organization committed to supporting cotton farmers throughout the supply chain as they transition to and sustain organic practices. Together, GOTS and OCA seek to convey the message that brands can bolster the organic cotton supply by investing in and purchasing organic in-conversion cotton.

“Global Standard and GOTS-certified companies tirelessly work behind the scenes to ensure a more organic, sustainable, and socially responsible textile industry. However, consumers don’t always grasp the true meaning of this when they pick up a GOTS item in a store,” shared Holger Stripf, head of marketing at Global Standard. “This campaign serves as a fun, engaging way to educate the public on living eco-consciously and why choosing organic textiles is better for human health and the planet.”
