Warning: This post contains spoilers for Episode 4 of Industry Season 4.

Industry is known for its provocative narratives. Currently in its fourth season, the intense HBO finance drama, conceived by former investment bankers Mickey Down and Konrad Kay, has moved beyond its initial London trading-floor setting to delve into a broader—and more cynical—examination of power dynamics, social class, gender, race, and individual ethics.

Yet, even for a show accustomed to startling fatalities, ongoing patterns of abuse, and persistent professional harshness, the conclusion of Season 4’s fourth episode appeared to reach unprecedented levels of moral decay. The episode, titled “1000 Yoots, 1 Marilyn,” provides a more explicit view of the profound decline of Pierpoint’s notoriously outspoken former mid-level trader, Rishi (Sagar Radia), following the abrupt execution of his wife, Diana (Emily Barber), by a loan shark due to Rishi’s substantial gambling debts at the end of Season 3.

“That fundamental aspect is disrupted when a significant event occurs,” Down remarked to TIME in 2024, referring to the surprising twist in the finale. “And having your wife shot before you to clear a gambling debt is a monumental occurrence, implying that Rishi in Season 4 will be a fundamentally altered character compared to his portrayal in Season 3 and earlier.”

Prior to Episode 4, it was revealed that Rishi faced difficulties in finding legitimate employment, unable to clear even rudimentary background checks. This compelled him to accept an illicit offer from Harper (Myha’la) for work as a quasi-private investigator. However, it was only in Sunday’s broadcast that the complete picture of Rishi’s dire circumstances became apparent. Having relapsed after a short period in rehab and a seemingly half-hearted suicide attempt, Rishi’s escalating drug and sex addiction is disrupted by an unforeseen call from his deceased wife’s mother, Mary (Melissa Knatchbull)—whom he has saved in his phone as “Cow-in-Law”—informing him that he is at last permitted to visit his young son, Hugo.

During their meeting, Mary tells him that if he agrees to change Hugo’s surname from Ramdani to the grandparents’ own name, Smith, they would then contemplate arranging additional, albeit always supervised, visitations. While Rishi is not a particularly empathetic figure, the racial undertones of the affluent, white Smith family’s manipulative tactics are evident. “Rishi, any resentment I harbor for you is overshadowed by the magnitude of my devotion to God,” Mary states. “Every decision you’ve made contradicts this, yet even someone like you is not beyond His mercy.”

Subsequently, following Yasmin (Marisa Abela) and Whitney (Max Minghella) successfully orchestrating a damaging article about finance journalist James Dycker (Charlie Heaton) and his editor in a newspaper owned by Henry’s uncle, James is dismissed from his role at FinDigest. Consequently, he embarks on a desperate spree and encounters Rishi, who coincidentally enters the same bar bathroom where James is snorting stimulants. The pair then connect with an enigmatic, interfering stranger while smoking outside the pub, ultimately returning to Rishi’s apartment. There, the man provides them with drugs and persistently increases the volume of the already loud speakers. Rishi discloses that he was the one surveilling James, and James inquires about Rishi’s experience witnessing his wife’s death, triggering a PTSD-induced flashback for Rishi of the events preceding Diana’s murder.

The stranger then opportunely leaves for a beer run just before Rishi exits the bathroom to discover James unconscious and the police arrive at the apartment due to a noise complaint, further raising suspicions about the man’s role in their evening. Apprehensive about being held responsible for James’ overdose, Rishi moves to the balcony and hesitantly prepares to leap to his death. Nevertheless, the fall merely fractures his ankles, leaving him in severe pain as he tries to crawl away before officers apprehend him.

If Rishi’s future prospects previously appeared bleak, this latest event undoubtedly represents an unparalleled nadir for any character within the series. In light of these recent occurrences, it appears Radia accurately predicted Rishi’s trajectory when questioned about his character’s future after the Season 3 finale. “I believe it’s more probable to see him spiral further out of control,” he stated to TIME. “We presumed he had reached his lowest point, only for an entirely new abyss to emerge.”
