A recent poll indicates a decline in Americans’ optimism regarding the nation’s trajectory during September, primarily fueled by increasing dissatisfaction among Republicans.
Gallup’s findings reveal that 29% of Americans express satisfaction with the country’s direction, marking the lowest point since Trump’s return to office in January. Satisfaction levels among Democrats remained steady at approximately 1%, while independents held at around 23%.
The most significant decrease in sentiment originated within President Donald Trump’s own party. The proportion of Republicans expressing satisfaction with the country’s course decreased from 76% in August to 68% in September. The survey spanned September 2-16, encompassing the September 10 death of a conservative figure.
When asked about the “most pressing issue facing the nation,” respondents increasingly cited “crime” and “national unity” as areas of concern.
Trump’s approval rating stands at 40%, consistent with its level after an initial drop from 47% in February, his first month back in office.
During former President Joe Biden’s final year, Gallup’s data showed even lower satisfaction rates among Americans, averaging around 20%.
The poll’s results are based on telephone interviews conducted with a randomly selected group of 1,000 adults across the United States. The poll carries a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
