WeRide and Renault Group Pilot Autonomous Robobus in Spain

BARCELONA, Spain, March 11, 2025 — WeRide (Nasdaq: WRD), a global leader in self-driving technology, and Renault Group are launching a free autonomous Robobus trial in downtown Barcelona from March 10th to 14th. The trial aims to demonstrate the maturity and potential of automated transportation technologies in a challenging urban setting. This demonstration underscores the technological leadership of WeRide and Renault in providing autonomous driving solutions that promote agile, flexible, modern, eco-friendly, and affordable transportation, particularly for European cities striving for carbon neutrality and Low Emission Zones.

This marks the first Spanish trial of WeRide and Renault Group’s Level-4 autonomous vehicle for public transportation, building on their previous collaboration during the 2024 Roland-Garros tennis tournament.

“The Barcelona trial is a key moment in WeRide’s international expansion, showcasing our technological leadership beyond Asia and into Europe,” stated Tony Han, founder & CEO of WeRide. “By deploying our Level-4 autonomous Robobus in Barcelona’s complex urban environment under real traffic conditions, we are highlighting the maturity of our technology and its adaptability to various global environments. This partnership with Renault Group reinforces our shared commitment to making smart, sustainable mobility solutions accessible worldwide.”

Last month, WeRide announced its first fully driverless commercial Robobus deployment in Europe as part of a shuttle service partnership with beti, Renault Group, and Macif. This service will feature an L4-level automated mobility solution in France’s Dôme region. In January, WeRide announced its first commercial autonomous shuttle project in Europe at Zurich Airport and was selected as the technology provider for an autonomous driving pilot project by Swiss national railway Schweizerische Bundesbahnen (SBB).

The experimental Robobus, authorized by the Barcelona City Council and the Directorate General of Traffic, will operate from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM between March 10th and March 14th, following a circular route of over 2 kilometers. The objective is to allow passengers to experience autonomous driving easily and safely in real traffic. The route includes four stops for convenient boarding and disembarking, offering riders a chance to experience the future of autonomous and sustainable driving while enjoying a unique tour of Barcelona.
