China Hosts International Wine Expo to Foster Industry Collaboration

YINCHUAN, China, Aug. 12, 2024 — An international expo aimed at fostering exchange and cooperation within the wine industry opened on Friday in northwest China’s Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, a prominent wine-producing region in the country.

Organized by the regional government, the Fourth China (Ningxia) International Wine Culture and Tourism Expo showcases 138 wineries and exhibitors from eight countries and regions, including France, Italy, Spain, and Chile.

Under the theme “Chinese Wine, A Marvel to the World — Good Wine Originates from Unique Terroir,” the three-day expo includes a wine carnival, competitions, and other activities.

“The east foothills of Helan Mountain in Ningxia have undergone a significant process of growth and modernization over the past 40 years,” remarked John Barker, director general of the International Organization of Vine and Wine, during the event’s opening ceremony.

Barker highlighted Ningxia’s impressive achievements in international wine competitions and exhibitions, underscoring its burgeoning reputation as a world-class wine region.

Ningxia’s distinctive terroir, characterized by abundant sunshine and a cool, dry climate, provides an ideal environment for producing high-quality wines.

As China’s largest wine-producing region, Ningxia currently boasts 602,000 mu (about 40,133 hectares) of grape plantations and 261 wineries and grape-growing enterprises, which collectively produced 140 million bottles of wine in 2023.
